How to jailbreak iPhone 2G or 3G 3.0 firmware

June 20th, 2009

First, let me start out by saying, BACK UP YOUR DATA.  Do this both through iTunes and manually through SSH for your current jailbroken data.  You never know when you’ll have to delete everything and start over.  Also, this method is 100x easier than the Pwnage Tool.  I recommend this for the average user.

If you need your phone UNLOCKED, this will not unlock it yet.  This is only for ATT paying customers that activate through iTunes.

1.  Search Google for iphone 3g 3.0 firmware or try these links

3.0.0 (2G): iPhone1,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw
3.0.0 (3G): iPhone1,2_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw

2.  Download redSn0w for your OS and make sure it’s for the 3.0 firmware.

You can try here:

http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/4965140/redsn0w-win_0.7.1.zip

or google it.

3. Update your iPhone to 3.0.  You can do this in iTunes by letting it do it automatically, or manually use the ipsw you downloaded.  Either way is the same.  Just make sure you are at 3.0 before you try redsn0w.

4.  Run RedSn0w.  This program has a wizard, but the general idea is: select the ipsw you downloaded, NEXT NEXT..etc.  Then you enter your phone in DFU mode and redsn0w installs everything.  It should be updated in a few minutes…you’ll see your iPhone showing progress.

5.  Enjoy…you should have Cydia on  your 3.0 firmward.

If all else fails, start over with restoring your iPhone through iTunes.

How to use Excel’s Subtotals feature - Step by Step

January 20th, 2009

At my organization there are many intelligent people.  Some of them have been in their field for over 20 years and they are well educated in what they do.  However, there’s always a need for me to run reports and correlllate information for them.  I usually run a standard report and manipulate the data and spreadsheets accordingly to fit the user’s need.  I feel that Excel’s Subtotal feature is one of the most powerful tools to condense and summarize information, without having any programming or report writing skills.  Read more…

How to run Linux from a USB stick - Step by Step

January 15th, 2009

Do you have an extra USB flash drive laying around? I know I have a few that just sit there and take up space. I figured, why not put it to good use? I started doing some research and experimenting until I finally compiled some solid steps to setting up my extra USB drives for Linux. I couldn’t find an easy enough step-by-step solution to get this done, so I’ve decided to put this together myself. I had a few prerequisites though. Read more…

A Game of Thrones - My thoughts on this wonderful book

January 11th, 2009

I have finally just completed A Game of Thrones by George R R Martin, the first book in the saga: A Song of Ice and Fire.  I would consider myself a fairly easy to please reader and I never let myself get too enthralled in books or characters therein.  I just might have to reevaluate my stance on this.  I have never been more entertained while reading a book of this nature.  Martin creates a whole world in the first book in this series that he should be able to write 20 books about.  Read more…

4 Reasons for Cloud Computing - and why we don’t need it yet

January 6th, 2009

As of late, I’ve been doing some researching and experimenting with Cloud computing.  There’s a lot of neat concepts, interfaces and functioning websites that are currently freely available.  The only problem is that everyone is well entrenched in services that provide very similar solutions.  There’s also some sacrifices you’ll have to make, i.e. not every program is Cloud compliant.   I’m basing most of my observations on AirSet, since I feel it is headed in the best direction and includes features not seen in any other solution.  And away we go… Read more…

Well, I never thought it would come to this…

December 30th, 2008

Yeah, I’ve done it.  I’ve finally decided to start my own blog.  It came to me that I should voice my thoughts, rather than just keep them as electrical synnapses of my brain.  It seems they wanted to be written down instead of disappearing into nothingness.
